Wae Rebo is an extraordinary traditional Manggarai village, carefully preserved within a protected nature conservation forest at 1,125 meters above sea level. This remote highland community is home to seven traditional circular houses known as Mbaru Tembong, each shared by several families and built using sustainable, ancestral techniques. Life in Wae Rebo is closely connected to the land, with villagers relying on small-scale agriculture such as coffee, taro, and vegetables. Reaching the village requires a mindful 3–4 hour hike through forest trails and natural water sources, offering a low-impact way to experience one of Flores’ most authentic cultural landscapes.
Begin your journey very early from Labuan Bajo at 04:00 am, traveling inland through rural landscapes of villages, rice fields, and rolling hills. Upon arrival in Denge Village, enjoy a simple, locally prepared breakfast at a village home, followed by a short briefing focused on responsible trekking and cultural awareness.
At around 09:00 am, start the trek to Wae Rebo. The trail ascends gradually through forest paths that support local biodiversity, leading to Post 2 at Pocoroko, a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the southern coast and the Savu Sea. This is the final point with mobile phone reception, encouraging a deeper connection with nature. A short break is taken here to enjoy a snack box or lunch box.
Continue trekking to Nampe Bakok, where you will be rewarded with a full view of Wae Rebo village, nestled harmoniously within its natural surroundings. Arrival in Wae Rebo is around 1:00 pm. Spend approximately two hours in the village to observe traditional architecture, take photos respectfully, and connect with the local community.
After enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and mountain views, begin the return trek between 14:30 – 15:00, following the same trail downhill to the waiting vehicle. Travel back to Labuan Bajo, arriving around 19:00, with a stop for dinner at your own expense along the way.
